एक पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार एक साहूकार के 7 लड़के और एक लड़की थी। सभी भाई  अपनी छोटी बहन से काफी प्यार करते थे यहां तक के अपनी बहन को खाना खिलाने के बाद ही खाना खाते थे।  एक बार उनकी बहन शादी के पश्चात ससुराल से मायके आई हुई थी।  कार्तिक मास की कृष्ण पक्ष की चतुर्थी तिथि के दिन करवा चौथ का व्रत रखा गया सातों बहनों के साथ साथ उनकी बेटी वीरावती ने भी करवा चौथ का व्रत रख लिया। रात के समय जब साहूकार के सभी लड़के भोजन करने बैठे तो उन्होंने अपनी बहन को भी भोजन कर लेने के लिए कहा।  इस बात पर  उनकी बहन वीरावती ने कहा कि चांद अभी नहीं निकला है इसलिए वह अभी भोजन ग्रहण नहीं कर सकती अर्घ्य देने के पश्चात ही भोजन करेगी। 

साहूकार के बेटे अपनी बहन की यह पीड़ा देख कर बहुत दुखी हो रहे थे क्योंकि उन्हें लग रहा था कि उनकी बहन का भूख के कारण काफी बुरा हाल है। साहूकार के  बेटे नगर के बाहर चले गए और वहां पर उन्होंने एक पेड़ पर चढ़कर अग्नि जला दी  ताकि दूर से देखने पर वह बिल्कुल चंद्रमा की तरह लगे।  घर आकर उन्होंने अपनी बहन से कहा कि देखो चांद निकल आया है इसलिए  उसे भी अब अर्घ्य देकर व्रत तोड़ लेना चाहिए और भोजन ग्रहण कर लेना चाहिए। वीरावती ने अपनी भाभियों को भी कहा कि चांद निकल आया है इसलिए अभी व्रत तोड़ दे लेकिन उन्होंने ऐसा करने से मना कर दिया क्योंकि उन्हें भाइयों की इस योजना का पता लग गया था एवं उन्होंने वीरावती को भी कहा कि अभी चांद नहीं निकला है। वीरावती ने अपनी भाभियों की बात को अनसुना कर दिया और भाइयों के द्वारा दिखाए गए चांद को ही अर्घ देकर अपना व्रत तोड़ लिया। व्रत तोड़ने के पश्चात जब वह भोजन ग्रहण करने के लिए पहला निवाला लेने लगी तो उसे  श्री आ गई, दूसरे निवाले पर बाल निकल आया और तीसरे निवाले पर उसे अपने पति की मृत्यु की खबर मिली। तब उसे समझ में आ गया कि गलत तरीके से व्रत टूटने के कारण ही ऐसा हुआ है क्योंकि श्री गणेश जी गलत तरीके से व्रत टूटने की वजह से काफी रुष्ट हो गए थे। 

वह एक साल तक अपने पति के शव के पास बैठी रही। एक साल बाद जब फिर से करवा चौथ का व्रत आया तो उसने अपनी भाभियों को सुहागिन होने का आशीर्वाद दिया एवं खुद भी व्रत रखा। श्री गणेश जी उसकी श्रद्धा भावना को देखते हुए काफी प्रसन्न हुए और उन्होंने उसके पति को जीवनदान दे दिया।

एक दूसरी कथा के अनुसार करवा देवी और उसका पति एक गांव में रहते थे। एक दिन उसका पति जब नदी में स्नान करने गया तो उस दौरान मगरमच्छ ने उसका पैर पकड़ लिया और उसे नदी में खींच लिया। पति की आवाज सुनकर करवा नदी के किनारे पहुंच गई और मगरमच्छ को उसने एक कच्चे धागे से पेड़ के साथ बांध दिया। इसके बाद करवाने यमराज को पुकारा और उसने अपने पति का जीवन दान मांगा तथा मगरमच्छ के लिए मृत्युदंड की कामना की। यमराज ने उसे कहा कि उसके पति का जीवन पूरा हो चुका है और अभी उसकी आयु को नहीं बढ़ाया जा सकता और दूसरी तरफ मगरमच्छ की आयु अभी पूरी नहीं हुई है इसलिए उसे मृत्युदंड नहीं दिया जा सकता। इस बात को सुनने  के पश्चात करवा को काफी क्रोध आया और उसने कहा कि यदि यमराज उसके  पति के प्राणों को नहीं लौट आएगा तो वह उसे शाप दे देगी। इस डर के कारण युवराज ने मगरमच्छ को यमलोक में भेज दिया और करवा के पति को जीवनदान दे दिया।
